Foxwoods is built for people who like to move between games. In a single visit you can play a few hands of blackjack, join a no-limit hold’em game, sit in on an afternoon bingo session, watch a race in the race book and check the board at the sportsbook, all without leaving the building. Few casinos anywhere offer that spread, and it is the main reason Foxwoods tops our casino ranking.

A sleek oceanfront floor with Atlantic City’s highest gaming salon

Ocean’s casino is one of the most attractive in Atlantic City: bold patterned carpets, warm lighting and a layout that feels open rather than maze-like. Natural light is limited on the main floor, as in most casinos, but the high-limit salon on an upper floor offers some of the most dramatic ocean views of any gaming room in the United States.

Baha Mar’s casino is unlike most of the floors in our set. Floor-to-ceiling windows let daylight in and show off the ocean and pools, and the design is airy, bright and luxurious. The Gaming Board’s licensee listing describes 119 live tables offering 18 different games and more than 1,100 slot machines, with a sportsbook and a separate gaming pavilion inside the water park.

The Turning Stone casino floor combines the energy of a regional casino with a few genuinely standout features: a large, well-managed poker room, New York’s best-known bingo hall and an in-house sportsbook. The main floor is non-smoking, while a separate section called Casino Blu is set aside for smokers and houses its own high-limit areas.

Sun City’s casino opened in 1979 and is described by its operator as South Africa’s first land-based casino. It combines a main floor of slots and tables with smoking and non-smoking sections and the Salon Privé, a higher-limit area for members of Sun International’s Sun MVG loyalty program.

What the scores reward

Range, comfort and the right to walk away

Foxwoods leads because almost every form of casino gaming is under one roof: a long-running poker room, a 2,000-seat-plus bingo hall, keno, a race book and a sportsbook, all on smoke-free floors. Ocean Casino Resort earns top marks for atmosphere and high-limit play, including a gaming salon high in the tower, but loses ground for the lack of a confirmed live poker room.

Baha Mar has the most beautiful floor in our set, filled with daylight and sea views, yet its protection score reflects less visible support resources and a visitors-only regime. Turning Stone runs an excellent 32-table poker room and a busy bingo hall, but its high-limit rooms sit in the smoking section. Sun City is pleasant, well regulated and historically important, but compact by comparison, with no poker room, sportsbook or bingo hall.
